The Daytona's scarcity stems from a perfect storm of factors: limited production numbers, exceptional demand, and its status as perhaps the most desirable sports chronograph ever made. Rolex produces the Daytona in smaller quantities than sports models like the Submariner, whilst demand has exploded over the past two decades—partly due to the Paul Newman Daytona auction record and the watch's prominent placement in popular culture.

Authorised dealers receive few pieces annually and often have waiting lists with hundreds of names. From 2016 onwards, Rolex introduced Cerachrom ceramic bezels on steel Daytona models—these are virtually scratchproof, won't fade in UV light, and maintain their appearance indefinitely. The ceramic bezel models (reference 116500LN onwards) represent the current generation and command premium prices, whilst steel-bezel Daytonas offer a more vintage character and are often more accessibly priced in the pre-owned market.
