A.Lange & Sohne Saxonia Moon Phase

Two classic complications, wrapped up in one seriously elegant package.

The A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Moon Phase is a brilliant example of what the Germans do best: take a beautifully proportioned dress watch and then absolutely nail the details.

Housed in a 40mm 18-carat pink-gold case, the Saxonia has a wonderfully understated presence on the wrist. The warm tone of the gold works perfectly with the argenté solid-silver dial, creating a combination that is luxurious without being remotely flashy.

The dial is where things get really interesting. At 12 o’clock sits Lange’s instantly recognisable Outsize Date, with its large twin-aperture display providing exceptional legibility and giving the watch its unmistakable Lange identity. At 6 o’clock, the moon-phase display is integrated into the subsidiary seconds dial, creating a beautifully symmetrical and balanced layout.

The moon itself is presented on a deep-blue disc, giving the otherwise restrained dial a subtle splash of colour. It’s a fantastic example of Lange’s ability to make complicated watchmaking look effortless.

Inside, you’ll find the automatic calibre L086.5, visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The movement is beautifully finished in typical Lange fashion and provides an impressive 72-hour power reserve. At just 9.8mm thick, the Saxonia also retains the slim, elegant proportions you want from a proper dress watch.

And then there’s the accuracy of that moon phase. Once correctly set, it only requires a correction of one day after approximately 122.6 years.

Because apparently getting the moon right for a lifetime wasn't enough.

Finished on an alligator leather strap with an 18-carat pink-gold buckle, the Saxonia Moon Phase is a proper high-end dress watch: refined, technically impressive and packed with the sort of tiny details that reward you every time you look at it.
