IWC Aquatimer Chronograph 'Tribute to Calypso' Limited Edition
Presented in good condition this amazing example of the 2009 Limited Edition IWC Aquatimer Tribute to Calypso, Ref: IW378203.
The IWC Aquatimer Cousteau Diver Tribute to Calypso is a tribute to Jacques Yves Cousteau, who for years sailed the Seven Seas with the legendary Calypso research sea vessel. In 1996 the Calypso sank after a collision at the Singapore Harbour. After years of uncertainty, the boat has now been transferred to a special wharf in Concarneau, where restoration and refurbishing efforts are in progress. IWC contributed part of the proceeds from the sale of each of the 2500 Limited Edition Aquatimer Chronograph Cousteau Divers towards the salvation of this legend.
This watch features a 44mm steel case, a near sunburst blue chronograph dial and is attached to the original rubber strap. The watch comes as a full set with everything included.
First unveiled in 1967, the Aquatimer was the first true dive watch from IWC. The Aquatimer represented a massive investment in research and development from IWC, with new equipment and tools created specifically for developing and testing the Aquatimer. A plastic crystal, screw-on case back, and new spring-sealed crown ensured that the Aquatimer could handle the pressure of an actual dive, and the inner rotating bezel ensured that it would not be accidentally adjusted during a dive. The iconic dial design is still recognizable in today’s Aquatimers, from the bold hour markers to the shape of the hands.
