Panerai was one of the first manufacturers of waterproof watches. Founded in Florence 1860. Giovanni Panerai founded a watchmaking school, a repair shop, and retail shop; the first in the city of its kind. The company became a retailer for Swiss watches, but grew into a watchmaker; purchasing parts as well as movements and putting together to create watches. At one point they would use Rolex movements, cases and even dials. These early Panerai watches were contracted to the Regia Marina (the Italian Navy) for its divers.
