Rolex Daytona 6265

by Rolex
Price on Application

Rolex have been producing Chronograph watches since the 1930s but it wasn’t until 1963 with the onset of the “Space Race” that the word Cosmograph appeared on a Rolex timepiece.  This word and indeed the engineering successes of the time evoked a sense of action, daring and sportiness which was further enhanced with Rolexs sponsorship of the Le Mans 24 hour race later known as the Daytona to appeal to American clients. Thus in 1964 the Daytona was born.

There were many variations to the Daytona and numerous references relating to the multitude of models produced but in 1970 the Daytona Ref 6265 “Big Red” made its debut.  Called the Big Red because of the word Daytona in large Red lettering above the centre sub-dial this watch fast became a favourite amongst racing Drivers because of the three sub-dials relaying all the information the driver could require.  The watch was also one of the first to sport Tritium Lune spots around the periphery of the dial as indicated by the “T Swiss T” lettering below the 6 o’clock marker.  The watch commanded an enthusiastic following because of the number of famous people who wore the Big Red, the most eminent of which was probable Paul Newman who was himself a racing driver of some note.

Similar to the models that came before it, the vintage Daytona ref. 6265 features a case that measures just a hair under 38 mm, topped with a bezel engraved with the tachymeter scale. Rolex added the screw-down chronograph pushers to the case to ensure that the watch was indeed a waterproof “Oyster” version. Furthermore, while early versions of the Daytona ref. 6265 had a Twinlock screw-down winding crown, later editions included a bigger Triplock screw-down winding crown for a better seal.

We at Pride & Pinion are rightly proud to be able to present this beautiful “Big Red” Daytona ref 6265 dating to 1974.  This watch with its manual 727 calibre movement is in original condition with an unmarked plexiglass lens and is complemented by a stunning steel Jubilee Bracelet.  The watch is being sold as Watch Only and prospective purchasers are asked to contact the Vault for further information, viewing and pricing.

History is marked by many famous events and in horological terms, the 6265 Big Red is in a class of its own.
