Hodinkee Article about the Deepsea 126660

The Sea-Dweller is definitely not Rolex’s best-known watch. Yet, its longevity has nothing to do with chance, it is the embodiment of everything Rolex stands for: - “producing durable watches for everyone”. This design was developed from a need to equip a small number of saturation divers and to go deeper than the Submariner could and to cope with the extreme pressures of the deep.

The Sea Dweller first appeared in the late 1960’s and it was a variation on the Submariner which could already reach impressive depths of 200 meters (660 feet). Divers from SeaLab noted that a strange phenomenon kept happening to their beloved Submariners. The crystal would often pop out in the decompression chamber after a dive.

These were not casual dives but hardcore underwater experiences, as the whole purpose of SeaLab was to study the effects of prolonged exposure to extreme depths, this is where the nickname “Sea-Dweller” came from, which eventually stuck.

In the end, a rather simple but efficient mechanism was developed, a helium escape valve on the side of the case. (Rolex's innovation is Swiss patent CH492246). By letting the helium particles escape through a controlled mechanism, the exploding plexi issue was solved. Some refer to the Sea Dweller as Rolex's most dedicated tool watch.
